The Loblolly Pine grows up to 169 feet tall and can live up to 275 years.
Compared to the Aleppo Pine found in the Holy Land:
Loblolly grows on average twice as fast and tall as the Aleppo
It's needles can be two to four times longer and it's cones mature in half the time.
Native Americans and early colonists used pine resin boiled into tar to preserve their wooden boats.
The name Loblolly comes from a combination of British words that mean "mud puddle", where the tree likes to grow.
Used for pulp, mulch and timber, this tree is considered one of the most commercially valuable in the U.S.
Central to the economic vitality of Laurel, MS, the town holds an annual Loblolly Festival on the first Saturday in October.
