Although the berries are eaten by white-tail deer and many bird species, they are poisonous to humans and pets.
In addition to being a popular decoration in Western Christmas traditions, the Romans and Druids historically included the evergreen holly in their winter solstice traditions.
Native Americans used tea from the holly to treat cough, and the bright red berries to make buttons.
